Deborah and I had the great good fortune to see Bob Dylan in concert last summer. It was a terrific show, with a stellar band backing Bob on a great selection of old and new songs, including “Ballad Of A Thin Man” (“something is happening here but you don’t know what it is, do you Mr. Jones?”), “Just Like A Woman,” and an epic version of “Like A Rolling Stone” to close the show.

If you’re not of my generation, you may not appreciate just how important Dylan was (and is). How irrevocably he changed the landscape of popular music. Judging by the number of enthusiastic fans at the concert in their twenties and thirties, his legacy hasn’t been forgotten. But what you may not know is that, despite turning 69 this year, Bob continues to perform over 100 shows a year. In fact, he’s been touring constantly since the late ‘80s, in what has come to be known as the “Never Ending Tour.”

Think of it. Our beloved Mr. Dylan has been more or less permanently on the road for over 20 years! I found myself reflecting on the generosity and heart of this man, who could presumably just relax for the rest of his life on his Malibu estate (or pretty much wherever he wanted) but has instead chosen to continue creating and publicly sharing himself with us all.

In his 2004 interview with Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes, Dylan gave some insight into why he hasn’t retired:

Bradley: Why do you still do it? Why are you still out here?
Dylan: Well, it goes back to the destiny thing, you know. I made a bargain with it a long time ago, and I’m holdin’ up my end.
Bradley: What was your bargain?
Dylan: To get where I am now.
Bradley: Should I ask who you made the bargain with?
Dylan: [Laughs] With the chief, uh…the chief commander.
Bradley: On this earth?
Dylan: In this earth…and the world we can’t see.

Do you see? It’s his life’s purpose. He made a promise to the “chief commander” and he’s making good on his promise. And the world is a better place for it.

So what about you? Are you being true to your destiny? Are you keeping your promise about your life’s work? For myself, I have taken inspiration and hope from Mr. Dylan’s example. I may never have his influence or stature in the world, but every day my life touches the lives of others and in that I am able to fulfill, in my own small way, the purpose for which I am in this life. And what could be more important than that?

Thanks for all you do.

Michael

When we build, let us think that we build forever.
Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone.
Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for;
and let us think, as we lay stone on stone,
that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred
because our hands have touched them,
and that men will say,
as they look upon the labor and see wrought substance of them,
